Course benefits/Highlights

Most clinicians do not read the dental literature, which is a petty and makes them easy targets for sales people. This course will focus on one of the core aspects of endodontic treatment, which is the disinfection of the root canal system. What do we know and why do we know it? An easy approach to read clinical papers will be presented, and 3 articles will be discussed that influenced our knowledge and clinical approach. Based on this background, clinically relevant microbiology will be discussed, followed by diagnostics of painful tooth conditions, emergency treatments, chemomechanical root canal disinfection, and revascularization.

At the end of the course you should be able to:

- Understand the core concepts of clinical trials.
- Become familiar with the nature of root canal infections.
- Be able to diagnose and treat endodontic emergencies.
- Learn effective strategies for root canal disinfection.
-Evaluate the core concepts and current challenges of regenerative endodontics.

Synopsis: Clinical trials evolve around a focused question. PICO stands for population-intervention-control-outcome. Only randomized trials can show causality, yet even these studies can have limited clinical meaning, because root canal treatments are complex microsurgical interventions with many redundant steps. A classic example of how people drew the wrong conclusions from clinical studies is the tale of the Enterococcus in root canal infections, which will be discussed. Based on the truly relevant microbiology of root canal infections, approaches for diagnostics, emergency treatments, root canal disinfection in general, and revascularization treatments will be presented.
